NASET School of Excellence

Academy of Whole Learning Receives Top Honor from National Association of Special Education Teachers

Academy of Whole Learning was recently named a 2015-2016 School of Excellence by the National Association of Special Education Teachers.  The St. Louis Park school was recognized for its work specializing in the education of students with autism spectrum disorder or related learning differences.

The honor is the highest award a school can receive from the National Association of Special Education Teachers, or NASET.  To become eligible for NASET’s School of Excellence distinction, private schools must meet “rigorous professional criteria” and “demonstrate truly exceptional dedication, commitment and achievement in the field of special education.” Academy of Whole Learning becomes one of only 72 schools to receive the honor nationwide, and the only school in Minnesota.

Offering a holistic, complete school program, Academy of Whole Learning provides an opportunity for students with autism spectrum disorder or related learning differences to succeed.  By understanding and supporting students’ neurological, physical, social and emotional needs, the school produces a positive and unique educational environment, one that encourages students to participate in and enjoy learning.  Each student receives an individually planned education, developed and administered by expertly trained staff, to cater to the student’s current developmental level and individual learning needs.

“It’s a nice confirmation, knowing that our peers in the special education field recognize the quality of education we provide here,” said Head of School, Wyayn Rasmussen.  “This recognition from the community really allows our teachers to be the best they can be.”  Rasmussen attributes a great deal of the school’s success to the highly-skilled teachers, whom are certified in both general education and special education practices.

The award falls in-line with the school’s trend in both growth and improvement.  Student enrollment has steadily increased in recent years, and Academy of Whole Learning has received numerous awards for its contribution to the special needs education community.

A member school of NASET since 2013, this was the first year Academy of Whole Learning applied for the School of Excellence distinction.  NASET serves as the only national membership organization dedicated solely to meeting the needs of special education teachers and those preparing for the field of special education teaching.
