TWLS was deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Search Institute President and CEO Peter Benson. Benson is most noted for his innovative thinking and research about the developmental assets children require for success.
“Dr. Benson’s research has really impacted how schools and communities work together to help kids be successful,” said Ann Rooney, TWLS Head of School.
“Specifically, at The Whole Learning School, a key goal for students with special needs is to teach them self-advocacy skills. The (Search Institute’s) assets foster a culture of responsibility in both our students and our parents, resulting in more self-reliant, independent learners,” Rooney said.
At TWLS, we believe in and support the 40 developmental assets. These assets are concrete, common sense, and positive experiences essential to raising successful young people. They have the power, especially during critical adolescent years, to influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible adults.
