Education of the mind without education of the heart is no education at all.     – Aristotle

Service learning is an educational strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection. It aims to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

At Academy of Whole Learning, we practice a three-prong approach to service learning. We academically prepare the students through course subject matter, participate in community-based learning experiences, and finish with group discussions where students connect their community experience to course material. Student-centered, hands-on, and directly applicable to the curriculum, our service learning is experiential education at its best!

Service Learning 2019

In 2019, AOWL partnered with Second Harvest Heartland to bring meals to hungry Minnesota families. Students learned about poverty and hunger through standards-based lessons in the classroom and worked together to create crafts to sell at the AOWL Market. Students presented what they learned and sold their crafts to guests in exchange for donations. AOWL raised 344 non-perishable food items in addition to $575 for Second Harvest Heartland! Following the market, each class participated in a reflection activity.
